East Fallowfield Township Applies for a $1,000,000 Grant for Stabilization, Drainage and Reconstruction Repairs to Mortonville Road

East Fallowfield Township Supervisors voted unanimously at their November 13 meeting to apply for a $1,000,000 grant from PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) program to fund a major roadway improvement/stabilization project along Mortonville Road. The grant, if received, would fund 70% of the estimated project cost of $1,310,733.

East Fallowfield Township Manager Scott Swichar said that “a portion of the damaged roadway has been closed in one direction for several years because of severe roadway embankment settlement and erosion.” The condition of the roadway also worsened in 2014 due to a significant rain event. The impacted portion of Mortonville Road is located north of Strasburg Road and just 350 feet south of the intersection with Saw Mill Road.

While East Fallowfield Township has taken proactive steps over the years to stabilize the roadway embankment and prevent the complete closure of the road, “the grant would enable the Township to keep the roadway open in both lanes by rebuilding the damaged portion of the roadway and installing a permanent roadway stabilization system along the impacted section,” said Swichar. “The stabilization system would consist of a soil nail wall utilizing 20-foot long soil nails and micropiles for slope stabilization to provide the necessary restraining forces to structurally support the roadway embankment,” he said.

State Senator Andrew Dinniman and the Brandywine Conservancy also provided their support of the Mortonville Road project by submitting letters of support to PennDOT.  “The Township should find out later next year if the grant was approved,” concluded Swichar.
